As you may have read, I became a fan of Matt Furey after using his combat stretching program to cure my flexibility issues that were causing me repetitive hamstring pulls when running and playing football.
Having had such a great experience, and having gotten bored of lifting weights in the gym all these years, I decided to try Combat Conditioning and start using my own body weight to workout.
Well, what can I say, I am a convert. The fact is, you don’t need weights (I never thought I’d say that). I now realize I have probably done more damage than good over the years using benches and squat machines.
The tendon strains and dodgy shoulder are a result of wear and tear, and at 34, it is time to start really taking care of my body because it doesn’t repair itself like a teenager anymore.
Looking at Matt Furey it is really hard to believe that he is so quick, powerful and flexible being as stocky as he is. But when you see him in combat condition, at 48 years old, I might add, he is incredible.
He totally destroys the theory that you need a gym, big weights and obsessively scheduled cardio sessions to get a ripped body with super stamina.
Combat Conditioning combines stretching and body weight exercises to simultaneously improve strength and flexibility. After 3 months on the program, aches and pains from years of training disappeared.
My body got flexible where it was tight. Muscles that were and could not be helped with weight training got stronger. I had gained more power, strength, stamina and endurance.

DVD #1 – The Leg and Lung Workout
This is very hard going. At first you think it will be easy, but the exercises, even though your arent running, take your breath away like you have run a marathon. Awesome for building stamina.
DVD #2 – The Pushup Workout
My upper body is strong so I can handle this, but Matt taught me exercises I’d never thought about which work out every muscle in my top half at the same time. The hindu press ups are just fantastic for working inner muscles – you will be shaking!
DVD #3 – The Ab and Back Workout
I have suffered a weak lower back for years. The doctor said it probably contributes to my hamstring issues, yet no matter how many squats I do my hamstrings still snap.
Put it this way, my back has never felt so flexible and I am touching my toes better than ever. Ab wise I am pleased, but still have a long way to go, I just can’t see to get the last 2 in the pack to appear.
I can’t say a bad word about Combat Conditioning. Honestly, next to Combat Stretching it is the best workout DVD I have ever invested in. Matt’s knowledge of the body and Kung Fu take your physique to levels of strength and stamina beyond what the heaviest weights or hours of cardio can.
Some days I don’t do the entire workout, I just do a few of my favorite exercises to prepare for the day and break a sweat.
Once you learn these techniques and exercises you really wont be that fussed about weights again. I still lift a bit, but I go light and babble on to everyone in the gym about Matt’s program. Highly recommended.
