There are thousands of self-help, self improvement, financial and personal success books out there. The market is flooded with them.
The self help sections in book stores used to take up a hard-to-find, out of the way shelf. Now each bookstore has a huge section devoted to them.
Quite honestly the vast majority of self-help books that are released these days are simply re-hashes of older books and old ideas, spun in a novel way.
If I was only ever able to give one piece of advice about self help it’s this… don’t get caught in the self-help trap of reading hundreds of books, always thinking that the next one will be the one that makes the difference. You’ll end up very disapointed.
You could read a hundred books and learn thousands of great concepts, but if you don’t apply them what difference does it makes?
The self-help trap is where reading book after book, attending seminar after seminar but never taking action, and then feeling bad for not being as successful as the self-help material promised.
You only need to read a few books to learn the best self-help concepts and strategies, and then you need to apply what you’ve learnt.
I used to have many reviews of books on this website but I’ve taken them off because publishers would send me so many books to review (and expect to see them on the site) I didn’t know what to do with them!
Please, if you are a publishers and are hoping to get your new release reviewed here, by all means send me books (I love receiving free stuff, who doesn’t), but please don’t expect them to be read – I simply don’t have the time.
Don’t get me wrong, if a book seems really interesting then I will read it and post a review on Amazon. Posting reviews on Amazon is now my prefered way of reviewing books because although I get plenty of hits here, in no way can my traffic compete with Amazons!
If it’s really good, and I mean REALY GOOD, then I might feature it in my store (click on the image to view my recommendations):
This store lists only my very favorite books, ones I believe are absolute must reads. I update it on a regular basis and if my opinion changes about a book then it will get the chop.
Lastly, if I had to recommend two books it would be The New Psycho Cybernetics, first published in the 60’s and still the best book on managing your self-image, and how to take successful action in life, and Pocket Mindfulness, a life-changing book on how to cultivate a mindful existence for increased happiness.
